E.M.V.Z. Girl

I am a vet and zootechnics student in Mexico. I'll be starting my 6 semester and I can't be more excited. This blog is about my experience as a student and everything that has to do with Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics...

Feel free to ask me anything.

Necropsy on a Toucan

Necropsy on a Toucan. Nothing out of the normal, except for the larvae we found in muscle, but when checked on the microscope the teacher couldn’t find the head in any of the larvae… Does anybody know what parasites can be found in muscle? No trichinella!

So this guy is 7 years old and his name is Pecas… The other day the owner came to me and asked me what had I done to his horse… I looked at the horse and told him that I had never touch his horse. He told me that we (my friend and I) had given Pecas medication because he was sneezing.
I caught him lying! I said to him “First, I always remember the names of the horses I give treatment to and the reason for the treatment; second, WE give IM injections in the neck, not in the top of the rump.”
Then he started laughing and told me that maybe one of his workers had done it and he didn’t know what medication the horse was given. I called our supervisor and he went four days after to drain because there was already purulence.
I’m just hoping for all the owners of these horses to open up their eyes and see that those horses are much more than money makers.

If you use that thermometer, I’ll bite you #foal #horse (Taken with Instagram)
He bit the owner…

I´m back, and with a little preview of what I have for you this week. One of my new classes is Systemic Pathology eekkkk! :D That means I´m doing necropsies again, and that means alot of pictures to share with you.
I also have Surgery!!!! Ahhh I can hear angels signing when I write the word… SURGERY! But because of many problems with society, mainly ignorant animal protectors, there are no pictures at the surgery room u.u but I´ll share with you the recovery pics… I can´t wait to start sharing with you guys…

So stressed out

I wanted to post about the dairy cattle I went to see, but right know I’m with my terminal projects and doing a presentation on Quinolones for pharmacology… Its not due until Tuesday, but I have so many things to do… I hate ends of semesters, two more weeks and its all over!

I’ve been so busy with school and life lately that I haven’t find the time to post anything… Also I’ve been working in a really big family project with my dad that takes time away too… But here a pretty pic of a lovely baby goat that’s smiling :D My friends got one day to the corral, and surprise! TWINS!!! I love them, they are the cutest, and love to jump, somehow they enter where the sheep are and steal their food…

Anti-rabies Campaign

Tomorrow it’s a big day for every vet student at UdG… Like each year, the anti-rabies campaign will take place and guess who gets to apply the vaccines? School authorities give us the week so we can go and be the ones to apply the shots (free) to every pet in the city.

Poultry Farming

I just notice that this semester is more about production than clinical with my classes, it’s kind of shocking for me because for 20 years I had seen myself as a small animals vet and now, a year later, I’m really excited about learning farm animals.

I haven’t posted because we have not started practices at school. The good news is that this might be the week! Our Zootechnics teacher wants to take us to a major Poultry Farm with egg-laying hens so I’ll be posting info about it as the week goes.

This mare has what we call in Mexico “aguadura” (I really don’t know the translation sorry) Her four hooves are infected, humid, have a dark color and are smelly. You see this in horses that are mantained in humid conditions.
The the funny thing about the condition of this mare is that the place where my friends have her it’s really dry so we are trying to figure out how the heck she got “aguadura”

My friends/classmates have this lot and started a sheep production system…Anywho, we socialize a lot at the “corral” and we get our hands dirty with knowledge. They have around 150 to 200 sheeps, and not a while ago introduced goats, horses, hens, donkeys and they already have like seven dogs.
It’s a great place to learn, practice, and have the time of your life…
